Each year, June through to August slows down in the business with weddings. Not as many people getting married, I guess because of the cold. But there is something about a winter wedding that I love. I feel like the beginning of winter and the end of winter would be the perfect time to get married.

I am obsessed with Berta Bridal Wedding dresses and this dress above, which is my dream wedding dress. So simple and elegant, yet so perfect for a winter wedding.

Starting your own business as being a makeup artist can have its pros and cons, as can any other job or business. Don’t get me wrong, I’m no expert and I think each day is a learning curve. I had two jobs and worked seven days while still trying to achieve my dream of building Bella Kreations and being a makeup artist. Five years later, I am living my dream!

Growing a business isn’t easy and it’s not going to happen overnight – it involves hard work and dedication. There will be many times you will want to give up and you will feel like you’re not getting anywhere. It’s taken a lot to get to where I am now and it didn’t come easy. It still isn’t easy.

The first thing you need to do is set goals, write down everything from what you want to achieve, to where you want to be in the next few years. I also feel you need to find inspiration each day, because it can be really easy to lose motivation and so hard to get back if you don’t keep going.

Surround yourself with people that believe in you and motivate you. And those who don’t believe in you, they’re your biggest motivation because you’re going to prove them wrong. I really believe in empowering eachother and admiring other makeup artists’ work, but I also believe this is another type of motivation – if they are doing great, there is no reason you can’t!

Take every opportunity that is thrown your way. I have done many unpaid jobs as a makeup artist and jobs for very little money, but when you’re starting out I think this is key, as you never know where it will lead you or who they will tell. Word of mouth is the biggest way to grow a business.

Over the past few years I have found the makeup artistry business to be very competitive, with Instagram and facebook evolving so much. I think social media is the best tool you can have for any business as it’s free advertising and you can target your market/clients.

Whenever I walk into doing a job I always remember this quote – ‘Your smile is your logo, your personality is your business card and how you leave others feeling after an experience with you becomes your trademark’.

I don’t believe in luck, I believe you create your own luck, you work hard to get to where you want to be. That isn’t luck, that’s dedication. Whatever you dream, you can achieve!

Being a makeup artist means long days and early morning starts! Anyone that knows me knows that I am not a morning person… I set three alarms before I actually have to get up!

Some may think it’s silly, but an extra 10 minutes is everything to me. I even ask my boyfriend to set his alarm as well and make sure I’m awake because I do have a talent of sleeping through alarms, so better be safe than sorry, right?

I always get asked when I show up to a makeup job, ‘how do you look like that this early in the morning?’. Over the years I have taught myself how to get ready within 20 minutes, which means full face of makeup, hair, dressed and out of the door.

I can’t just chuck my hair up in a messy bun and put a coat of mascara on. Well, I can, but I feel you have to be well presented no matter what time of day. Especially when I’m about to go do a client’s makeup for her wedding day. Do you really want your makeup artist to rock up looking like she just rolled out of bed? Even though most of the time I probably have!

Don’t get me wrong, when I’m up I love it, there is nothing like an early morning sunrise, everything seems so peaceful with hardly any traffic on the road. You can enjoy your morning coffee on the drive. This is also a must for me; as long a I have my coffee I’m good! At the end of the day I love my job and would not trade it for the world, even if this means early morning starts!

Above is a picture of the sunrise on Camden bridge, that my best friend Erin took on her daily morning run. She is a massive inspiration! If this doesn’t make you want to get out of bed every morning, I don’t know what does.

Being a mobile makeup artist means I get to travel, experiencing many places and locations. Over the ANZAC long weekend I was fortunate enough to travel up to the Hunter Valley for a makeup job for a client of mine Amy’s wedding, so I decided to bring my boyfriend Alex along and make a weekend of it.

I first met Amy on her sisters Ally’s wedding day after she had chosen me to be her makeup artist for her wedding day a few years back, as did their other sister Caroline in the meantime. Being three sisters, I was lucky enough to be the makeup artist of all three beautiful weddings.

Up at the Hunter Valley we stayed at the Pokolbin Village in one of the cabins, which was really cute and looks over the pool. They have their own cafe and restaurant on site with a few little shops so you don’t have to travel to far for your morning coffee!

We decided to head to dinner at Lillino’s Bar & Trattoria, which is located in Lovedale and about 15 minutes from where we were staying. We were welcomed by two huge friendly dogs that just laid there on the welcome mat! The food and wine was amazing – if you love Italian food I highly recommend this place!
